As a dropshipper, finding winning products in your niche can be difficult. With thousands of different suppliers and millions of products available, how do you find ones that are marketable, trending, and high quality? In this post, we’ll explore different ways to find great products to sell on your Shopify store.
Shut Up and Take My Money (SUATMM)
SUATMM was once a popular subreddit for “the best, most creative, and classiest gadgets and nerdware on the interwebz is now a fully-fledge website for trendy and viral products.” Up to a year ago, you could share cool and unique products on the subreddit and with a chance to drive serious traffic to your site if the community liked the product. This post alone received over 3,000 upvotes and over 200 comments! Today the subreddit is a bit diluted and doesn’t offer the potential for traffic and sales it previously did.
However, there’s still an opportunity to leverage SUATMM for product research. The brand now has its own website with listings for trendy, viral products that are selling. Visit http://www.shutupandtakemymoney.com/ and head over to the Best of section to view their best sellers.
This is Why I’m Broke (TIWIB)
Similar to SUATMM, TIWIB is an online catalog of popular Amazon products that are unique, funny, and sometimes strange. For example, one of the products on the TIWIB popular page is a Pimple Popper Toy. What’s great about this resource is that it displays on each product the number of times a visitor has saved the product, much like how AliExpress shares the order count for a given product on their site.
Use this resource for product research and potentially product sourcing as well.
Spy on Competitor Shopify Stores
Often times your competitors have winning products themselves. Looking at other stores in your niche will allow you to see their top selling products and try to source them yourself.
To start, head over to https://www.google.com/ and search “myshopify.com + niche”
As you see in the example above, we replaced niche with jewelry. You can replace niche with whatever industry or market your competitors are in. The google search will reveal results for other Shopify stores in that niche you choose. Visit their sites and look at the different products their promoting.
If you want to take it one step further, you can enter the following parameter to view any Shopify store’s best selling products.
/collections/all?sort_by=best-selling
This is a powerful method for finding winning products that customers are actively buying. If you know some of the top Shopify stores in your niche, skip google and simply add the parameter above to their URL.
Review Competitor Facebook Ads
This tactic works for any competitor, even if they don’t have a Shopify store. Facebook recently released a feature that allows anyone to view the Facebook ads currently being run by a business page. Check out the example below.
By visiting the Facebook Page of a competitor, you’re able to see all of their active ads. While it doesn’t include audience insights or engagement, it does include copy and images, which can help you identify their winning products.
To access this feature, visit any Facebook business page and select the “Info and Ads” tab on the sidebar menu. View the picture below for help.
Search Popular eBay Products
eBay is a great resource for trending products. We won’t be visiting eBay’s website, however. Instead, head over to http://www.watchcount.com/. This website sorts eBay products by those that receive a lot of interest and have many users watching them. In the example below, we searched for popular earrings.
After one search we’ve identified dozens of popular earrings being sold with thousands of watchers looking at them on eBay.
These are some of the most effective ways to find popular products to sell on Shopify. You may not necessarily be able to sell all of the products you find, but they should at minimum give you a good sense of what niches or product categories are trending in your industry.
Once you find a wholesaler to source a product for you, it’ll be important to know what to consider before selling any new products. Check out our Dropshipping Guide for more info on identifying quality products.
